Layering a suitcase so nothing shifts in transit

A suitcase packed without a deliberate layer order tends to settle into a jumble by the time it reaches the far end — heaviest items at the bottom near the wheels is the starting rule almost everything else follows from.

Start with shoes and any heavy, rigid items at the base near the wheels, since that’s the end that takes the most impact and benefits most from a stable, heavy foundation. Packing cubes of folded or rolled clothing go next, layered by how soon each is needed rather than by type alone.

Fragile or crushable items — a hat, electronics, anything in a hardside vanity case — belong on top, where the least weight presses down on them, and where they’re reached first without unpacking everything below.

What travelers ask

Where should shoes go in the layering order?

At the bottom, near the wheels, inside their own bag to keep soles away from clothing — shoes are typically the heaviest single item in a case and settling them low keeps the center of gravity stable when the case is wheeled or tipped.
