Can I fit a week's clothes in a 40L backpack?

Yes, for most travelers and most climates, with the right approach. The strategy that makes it work is a small set of interchangeable pieces — around five tops and three bottoms that all mix together — rather than a complete outfit packed for each of the seven days.

Genuine compression packing cubes, with a working second zip that forces air out after packing, make the physical volume fit once the wardrobe itself is reduced to essentials. Rolling rather than folding soft items adds a further, smaller space saving on top of that.

Bulkier climates or trip types — cold weather requiring a jacket and layers, or business attire that compresses less well — make 40L tighter, sometimes requiring either a slightly larger pack or accepting a mid-trip laundry stop rather than packing for every day without any repetition or washing.

Check with your airline and read the label before you follow anything here. Lithium battery watt-hour limits, liquids allowances and lock policies differ by carrier and by country, and change over time — the figures published by the airline or security authority you are actually traveling with take precedence over anything written on this site. A power bank or spare battery is carried exactly as its manufacturer and your airline specify, never estimated. We report what is published — a watt-hour rating, a size limit, a lock's official recognition — and this site describes the equipment only: nothing here is a guarantee about what a specific checkpoint will allow on a specific day.
