How long should a good suitcase last?

A well-built mid-range or premium hardside case, used a reasonable number of times a year and not routinely overloaded past its rated capacity, commonly lasts 5-10 years before the shell itself shows serious wear. Budget cases generally have a shorter realistic lifespan, sometimes 2-4 years of regular use before a shell crack or handle failure.

The parts most likely to fail before the shell itself are wheels, zip pulls and the telescoping handle mechanism — all replaceable individually on most well-known ranges, which extends a case’s practical life well beyond when the first component wears out.

Frequency of use matters more than calendar age for most failure modes: a case flown weekly will show wear far sooner than an identical case flown twice a year, regardless of how many years each has technically been owned.
