What's the best way to clean suitcase wheels?

Remove visible debris — hair, thread, small stones — from around the wheel and axle with a stiff brush or an old toothbrush first, since trapped debris is the most common cause of a wheel that rolls roughly or squeaks rather than genuine mechanical failure.

Wipe the wheel and the surrounding mount area with a damp cloth rather than soaking it, since water pooling inside the wheel housing can be harder to fully dry out than it is to clean, and trapped moisture risks corrosion on any metal components inside the mount over time.

For a wheel that still rolls roughly after cleaning, a small amount of silicone-based lubricant (not oil-based, which attracts more dust and debris) applied to the axle can restore smooth rolling — check the specific manufacturer’s guidance if available, since some sealed wheel units aren’t designed to be lubricated by the user at all.
