Why does my shoulder strap dig in on long carries?

A digging, uncomfortable shoulder strap on a long carry usually means the strap’s padding isn’t sufficient for the weight it’s bearing — either because the pack is genuinely overloaded for its design, or because a hip belt that should be sharing the load isn’t tightened correctly and is leaving the shoulders to carry weight they weren’t meant to.

Strap width matters too: narrower straps concentrate the same weight over a smaller area of the shoulder, which digs in more than a wider, well-padded strap carrying the identical load. This is one of the genuine differences between a basic budget backpack and a pack built specifically for load-carrying comfort.

If the pack has a load-lifter strap — a smaller strap connecting the top of the shoulder strap to the pack’s frame — adjusting it can shift some weight distribution and reduce digging without changing the main strap tension at all, a detail many travelers never realize is there to adjust.
