How to set a realistic luggage budget

How often a case will actually travel matters more to the budget decision than how much it looks like it should cost — an occasional-use case and a monthly-flyer case have genuinely different economics.

For a case flown once or twice a year, a budget or mid-range hardside case is usually the better economic choice — the extra durability of a premium shell and handle rarely gets exercised enough to justify the price difference over the case’s realistic lifetime.

For genuinely frequent travel, the calculation flips: a more expensive case with a more durable shell and a handle rated for sustained heavy loads tends to cost less per trip over several years than replacing a budget case that wears out faster under the same use. Set the budget against expected frequency, not against a single upfront number.
