Do I need an anti-theft backpack for city travel?

For travel involving crowded public transport, tourist-dense areas, or cities with a known pickpocketing reputation, an anti-theft backpack is a reasonable, low-cost precaution — lockable zip pulls and a hidden body-side pocket add real friction against a quick, opportunistic opening that a standard backpack doesn’t have.

It’s worth being realistic about what these features actually do. They deter casual, opportunistic theft rather than stopping a genuinely determined attempt — no zip lock or hidden pocket is a substitute for basic vigilance in a high-risk environment, and none of the manufacturers marketing these features claim otherwise in their fine print.

For travel that’s mostly car-based, rural, or in low-crime areas, a standard travel backpack is perfectly adequate and the anti-theft features add cost and sometimes bulk without much practical benefit. The decision comes down to the specific destinations and how much time will genuinely be spent in crowded public spaces with the bag.
