Is a 40L backpack enough for a week?

For most travelers, yes — a genuine 40L travel backpack comfortably covers a week, provided the packing strategy relies on a small set of interchangeable pieces rather than a full outfit for every day.

The key is planning around repeat-wear items: five tops and three bottoms that all mix together give more outfit combinations than their piece count suggests, and compression packing cubes make the volume genuinely fit rather than just theoretically fit.

Climate and trip type change the answer meaningfully. A week in a warm climate with lightweight clothing fits comfortably in 40L. A week that needs bulkier layers, specific equipment, or business attire that can’t be compressed as easily will feel tighter, and might push towards a slightly larger pack or accepting a laundry stop partway through.

Stated liter capacity also varies between manufacturers in how it’s measured — some count every exterior pocket, others only the main compartment — so two 40L packs from different brands can hold visibly different amounts once packed.
