Measure torso length from the C7 vertebra — the prominent bone at the base of the neck when the head tilts forward — down to an imaginary line across the top of the hip bones. This is a distinct measurement from overall height, and two people the same height can have meaningfully different torso lengths.
Compare that measurement against the specific pack’s stated torso-length range, usually given in centimeters for adjustable-back packs, rather than trusting a general size label like “medium” or a gender label without checking the actual range. Many packs from brands like Deuter and Osprey publish this range explicitly for exactly this reason.
If trying a pack in person, load it with a realistic weight before judging fit — an empty pack can feel fine on a torso length it isn’t actually suited to, since the fit issues from a mismatch mainly show up once the hip belt needs to carry real weight.
