How tight should a backpack hip belt be?

A correctly fitted hip belt sits with its padding centered over the hip bones (the iliac crest), tightened enough that it carries the bulk of the pack’s weight rather than the shoulders, but not so tight that it restricts breathing or digs in painfully after a few minutes.

A useful check is the shoulder straps: once the hip belt is properly tightened, the shoulder straps should feel only lightly loaded, mainly stabilizing the pack’s position rather than bearing significant weight. If the shoulders still feel the full load after tightening the hip belt, either the belt needs further adjustment or the pack’s torso length doesn’t suit the wearer.

Belt position matters as much as tightness — a belt worn too high (on the waist rather than the hips) or too low doesn’t transfer weight effectively regardless of how tight it’s pulled, since the hip bones are what the load needs to rest on.
