TPRC PR-85315 Smart underseat roller, 15 in review

The only bag in this hub whose listing names the airlines it is not recommended for — and the cheapest roller on this shelf.

The summing up The cheapest roller here, and the only listing in this hub honest enough to name the carriers its bag will not fit.

The tag at the top of this page says the under-seat allowance is set by the airline and not by the bag. Of the four bags in the American half of this hub, this is the only one whose listing acts on that. It names the carriers it is built for — American, Delta, United, Southwest — and then names the ones it is not: Spirit, Frontier and other ultra-low-cost airlines. It adds that under-seat space varies by aircraft and tells you to check the size guide before traveling. Every bag in this category claims to be airline approved; this is the only page in this hub that publishes the exception.

The figures behind it are complete: 14 in high, 15 long, 8 deep, 5.2 lb. Eight inches of depth is the dimension that matters most, because a gate frame is shallower than it is wide, and only one bag on this shelf is slimmer. The interior is fully lined with accessory pockets and there is an exterior side pocket, plus a side USB port that the listing twice says needs your own power bank.

Two things sit awkwardly. The first is the disagreement: the LUGGEX bag on this shelf, three tenths of an inch slimmer and an inch shorter, states that it fits as a personal item on Spirit — one of the carriers this page warns against. Both publish their dimensions; neither explains the conclusion. The second is closer to home. The identical bag in black carries a reference that differs from this one only in its color code, at a higher price, and its first bullet drops the Spirit and Frontier warning entirely. Same dimensions, same weight, same four remaining bullets word for word. The honesty on this page is a property of one color.

What it does well, and where it fails

Strengths

  • Names the carriers it fits — American, Delta, United, Southwest — and the carriers it does not: Spirit, Frontier and other ultra-low-cost airlines
  • States that under-seat space varies by aircraft and tells you to check the size guide before traveling, which is this hub's tag in the maker's own words
  • Publishes all three dimensions and the weight: 14 in high, 15 long, 8 deep, 5.2 lb
  • An 8 in depth, the second slimmest on this shelf — and depth is the dimension an under-seat frame bites on
  • A side USB port, with the listing stating plainly that the power bank is not included
  • A fully lined interior with accessory pockets and an exterior side pocket
  • The lowest price of the three rollers on this shelf

Compromises

  • Says it is not recommended for Spirit, where another bag on this shelf 0.3 in slimmer claims to fit Spirit as a personal item
  • No capacity in liters, where the bag below it publishes 24 L and 26 L
  • Two fixed in-line skate wheels rather than spinners, which the listing does not spell out
  • At 5.2 lb it is more than three times the weight of the soft tote on this shelf before anything goes in it
  • The identical bag in black is listed under a reference differing only in its color code, at a higher price and without the Spirit and Frontier warning
  • No laptop compartment, where the bag below it takes a 15.6 in machine

What travelers ask

Why does naming the airlines it does not fit matter?

Because it is the one thing the tag at the top of this page says cannot be got from the bag — the allowance belongs to the carrier. Every bag in this category is sold as "airline approved", and this is the only listing in this hub to publish the other half of that sentence: not recommended for Spirit, Frontier or other ultra-low-cost carriers, under-seat space varies by aircraft, check the size guide before you travel. A maker willing to name the flights its bag will fail on is telling you something about the flights it claims.

So can it go under a Spirit seat or not?

The two bags on this shelf cannot agree, and they are nearly the same size. This listing says Spirit is not recommended at 14 by 15 by 8 in. The LUGGEX bag on this shelf states it fits as a personal item on Spirit, Delta, Southwest, Hawaiian, American and Allegiant, at 15.7 by 13 by 7.7 in. The difference between them is three tenths of an inch of depth and an inch of height, with the LUGGEX longer by seven tenths. Both sets of figures are published; the conclusions drawn from them are opposite, and nothing on either page explains why. This shelf's buying tip is the way out of it: take the carrier's own published limit and favor a bag a centimeter or two under it on every dimension.

Does the USB port charge anything?

Not on its own, and the listing says so twice — the side port allows charging "using your own power bank (not included)". That is the honest description of this feature on every bag that has it: a socket on the outside wired to a plug inside. What it buys is not having to unzip the bag at the gate to reach a battery already packed in it.
