Stuff socks, a phone charger cable, or other small rolled items inside each shoe before packing it — this uses space that would otherwise sit empty and does not add any extra bulk to the case, since the shoe’s shape isn’t changed.
Pack shoes at the base of the case near the wheels, inside their own bag to keep soles away from clothing, and orient them heel-to-toe in pairs rather than side by side to use the available footprint more efficiently.
