Do cheap suitcases actually fail faster?

For frequent, heavy use, generally yes — budget cases typically use thinner shell material, simpler wheel mounts and lighter-duty zips, all of which show wear and fail sooner under repeated stress than the equivalent components on a mid-range or premium case.

For occasional use — a handful of trips a year — the gap narrows considerably, since the components simply aren’t exercised enough to reach their failure point as quickly. A budget case bought for occasional travel can offer genuinely reasonable value provided expectations match: it isn’t built for the same duty cycle as a case flown weekly.

The clearest sign a case is a false economy rather than reasonable value is a wheel, handle or zip failing within the first year or two of light, occasional use — that suggests a genuine quality shortfall rather than expected wear for the price paid.
