Does denier rating actually matter for softside luggage?

Yes, genuinely — denier rating measures the thickness of the thread used in the fabric, and it’s one of the few specifications that transfers meaningfully between different brands and products, unlike vaguer marketing terms like “durable ballistic nylon” that don’t specify an actual number.

Higher denier fabric resists abrasion from being dragged across pavement, conveyor belts and rough baggage handling noticeably longer than lower-denier fabric, even when both are marketed with similar durability language. A 1000D fabric will typically outlast a 420D fabric under the same repeated wear, all else being equal.

It isn’t the only relevant fabric specification — weave type and any protective coating matter too — but of the numbers actually printed on most softside luggage listings, denier rating is the most directly comparable and the most worth checking before assuming two “durable” fabric cases are equally durable.
