Why do suitcase wheels wear out so fast?

Wheels take more repeated mechanical stress than any other part of a suitcase — every meter rolled, every bump over a curb or a cobblestone, and the full weight of a packed case pressing down on a small contact patch of plastic or rubber. It’s genuinely the hardest-working component on the entire case.

Spinner wheels, which swivel as well as roll, have more moving parts and more points of potential wear than simple fixed inline wheels, though they’re also generally easier to manoeuvre. Rough surfaces — cobblestones, gravel, unpaved airport transfers — accelerate wear on either type significantly compared with smooth terminal floors and pavement.

Most well-known luggage ranges sell replacement wheels individually, which is worth knowing before assuming a worn wheel means the whole case needs replacing — it’s one of the cheapest and most common luggage repairs available.
